Ask local musicians to list their favorite songwriters, and a name that repeatedly comes up is Mike Love. In an archipelago in which seemingly half of all professional and backyard musicians fit within the singer-songwriter mold, such recognition is no small feat. Even more impressively, Love has gained such notoriety without the luxury of a local radio hit. There's also no record label or other commercial combine bringing Mike Love's name to the forefront; it comes 100% from his overwhelming impact on audiences and word of mouth.
At the heart of Love’s attack (a word used here in jest as Love is one of the kindest, most peaceful people on the planet) is supreme musicianship. Attend one of his solo performances and that will quickly become evident. Sitting on stage with just one acoustic guitar and a few foot pedals, Love creates a wall of gorgeous sound using a combination of loops, effects and mixing wizardry. Typically, a bass line will come in first, followed by a rhythm track, then various other effects until finally his warm vocals and lead guitar riffs catapult songs forward.
