Soulful is the first word that may come to mind upon hearing Kings of Spade lead singer Kasi Nunes. You’ll wish you could belt out vocals just as loudly with just as much style and just as much funk as she can, channeling a vibe that would make Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin proud (those who were around for Honolulu’s Treehaus electronica days will remember Kasi as a graceful, independent rhythm devil - perfect attributes for a frontwoman!). Then there’s the rest of the band. Jesse Savio, Matt Kato and Max Benoit create original, fiery psychedelic blues rock that ignites their audience night in and night out and sends all (both band members and attendees) home drenched in sweat.

After a two-year stint in Los Angeles that saw them record their impressive 2009 album, Crave, and play top venues such as House of Blues, Avalon and The Viper Room, Kings of Spade returned home with relaxed confidence, a state of mind that’s allowed them to revel in every opportunity that comes their way without pushing too hard to get ahead. Just as that formula works wonders in everyday life, it’s equally potent in the world of music. Their live performances exploded with energy, and people noticed, lots of people. The band soon began receiving requests to play many of the most high profile gigs in Honolulu and eventually, landed the spot as the one and only opening act for Bon Jovi’s debut Hawaii performance in 2010. And they’ve delivered each and every time – including last year as the closer’s for Hallowbaloo’s Nuboo Stage, a show that we still hear people rave about.

This year, Kings of Spade wrap up the whole shebang Saturday, Oct. 29th – taking over ‘the Venue’ at midnight and laying it down ‘til close. If you make the smart choice to check out this scene, don’t walk in expecting the latest hipster music or experimental deviations in search of the next big thing. Instead, be prepared for a contemporary spin on roots rock and blues and embrace it. It’s a sound that changed the world in the ‘60’s, and when delivered by a band locals hail as Kings, it’s just as powerful today.
