Soul brothers and sisters rejoice! The Freeradicals Projekt are leaving their Maui lair and descending into Hallowbaloo!! This seven-piece band is relatively new to the scene making their recent string of sold-out headlining shows on Maui all the more impressive. They've been generating that gargantuan buzz (heard clearly over here on Oahu) not through trendy electro effects or beat loops but rather through old-fashioned techniques, using traditional instruments to lay down bodacious grooves that are far too juicy for anyone to resist. Comprised of a diverse collection of individuals who draw inspiration from a wide range of sources, Freeradicals Projekt cover all the bases of soul music from '90's hip-hop sounds made famous by bands such as the Fugees to ultra smooth stylings a la Marvin Gaye. It's also clear that the band hails from Haiku, a town that's a stone's throw from Olinda where Jimi Hendrix blasted out his famed Rainbow Bridge performance. Freeradicals Projekt's 2010 release, Babylon's Falling, embodies these influences and produces so much more, with a chemistry between musicians that only fate could have brought together.
Maui Time writes, "The Freeradicals Projekt's groove is irresistibly danceable, their lyrics consummately conscious. Convivial synergy embodied, their sound is a neoteric fusion of funk, hip-hop, jazz, soul and world music. And perhaps most uniquely ... they exercise a modus operandi of progressive inversion, flipping every coin to its most positive face."
The core band members who've created this powerful juggernaut are Francisco "Frankie" Perez (emcee/vocals), Ami Shorr (saxophone), Michael Lawton (percussion), band leader/songwriter Rama Covarrubias (guitar) and Shea Derrick (vocals). Derrick's amazing soulful female vocals have been compared to Ella Fitzgerald and for good reason. Hearing her sing is worth the price of admission alone, and with a full cast of talent alongside her, the Freeradicals Projekt will likely not be making their final stop at Hallowbaloo but instead using the show as a springboard to propel their band and music to far-away lands.
Lots to be excited about with this show - one of the most buzzed about bands in the islands performing at one of the most high-energy gatherings of the year. Maui no ka 'oi? Come see for yourself.
