Nuboo Stage - 5:30pm

If you’re not ready for a raucous time, then don’t go see the Doolin Rakes. This Celtic rock ‘n’ roll band churns out classic and modern (and perhaps occasionally drunken) bar ditties, all of the swingin variety and all of which can become a fan anthem on any given night.

Staples of the Honolulu music scene for nearly 10 years, the Doolin Rakes bowed their first full-length album, ‘Irishman in Paradise’, in 2007 to a long-waiting and hungry fan base that bought out the entire first pressing of the CD within weeks of release.

Each member of this infectiously energetic five-piece band has an abundance of music history beneath their belts starting with towering lead singer and guitarist James McCarthy. As The Doolin Rakes’ frontman, a band whose songs are rooted in folk, McCarthy has no choice but be a resolute storyteller, and night in and night out, he responds to the call with great passion and skill. If his stage and screen acting resume aren’t enough to convince you of his rich storytelling talents, then consider that this musician, who writes, records and distributes songs in Hawaii with no national publisher or record label, was booked at this year’s 50th Annual Philadelphia Folk Festival, the longest running event of its kind in North America and headlined this historic year by greats such as Levon Helm and Arlo Guthrie.

Joining McCarthy in the Doolin Rakes’ line-up are fiddler Lesley Kline who learned her trade playing mariachi music with French miscreants from Calais to Nice during a decade-long stint in France, bassist Geoffrey Red who’s as comfortable with lumbering reggae as he is with rollicking reels, guitarist Jamie Winpenny well-seasoned from years of national touring and last but not least, commanding Welsh drummer Steve Howells who formerly played huge shows across Africa with various musical luminaries. the Doolin Rakes’ well-traveled and colorful pasts come together to give listeners a grand ol’ time with songs such as “Whiskey You’re the Devil,” “Groglegs” and “Star of the County Down.” Hawaiian Airlines’ magazine Hana Hou! writes that the Doolin Rakes have “built a loyal following for [their] rollicking whirlgig of a set list, which spans three continents and then some.”

Playing the Honolulu Irish pub circuit several times a week, the Doolin Rakes’ have garnered a strong reputation landing them frequent spots at huge community festivals and special events. The band was nominated for best rock album of the year for the 2008 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards and continue to proudly set the standard as Honolulu’s premier Celtic rock band. Grab some grog, push your way to the front of the Hallowbaloo stage and enjoy as the Doolin Rakes whisk you away on a foot-stompin, chorus-hollerin wild ride.
