Black Square is a band who makes many locals proud to call Hawai‘i home. Having been together since 2002, what started off as a hardcore punk trio eventually evolved into a signature blend of punk, ska and reggae. With catchy songs such as “Chinatown” and political anthems such as “No More War,” this Oahu-bred band grips the attention of fans old and new.
With four albums out and several mainland tours under their belt, Black Square at last drew major, much-deserved national attention this summer. At the time of this Hallowbaloo line-up announcement (August 2011), the band is currently crisscrossing the country performing on the Vans Warped Tour. And as rave reviews pour in from mainland music journalists and the band’s number of Facebook fans swells, it’s clear Black Square is being well received.

Black Square is a band whose live performance is not to be missed. The Honolulu Advertiser writes of a live show, “The room was stifling hot as people, dripping in sweat, crowded together shoulder to shoulder at the foot of the stage, just to be that much closer to the music. There wasn’t a static person in the place. Every person was dancing, jumping, or bobbing, moved by the upbeat sounds...” A Black Square show is pretty much synonymous with a dancing good time.
