Reviews & Accolades

Toro Y Moi / Chillwave + Muscle: "It's not a stretch to liken Baths to any number of beat-minded chillwavers, but the crucial difference is that where Toro Y Moi or Washed Out might let their sampled textures go slack to create a beanbag-ready laidback vibe, Baths' debut, Cerulean, is more suited to the weight bench. These beats have muscle." -PITCHFORK ALBUM REVIEW (8.2 out of 10) July 9, 2010

HIGH Energy Live Shows: "Baths may just be one guy, but when he takes the stage, 21-year-old Will Wiesenfeld transforms into a charismatic and engaging tour de force . . . Though the encore lasted for only one song, it was a stirring moment of further bliss in an already joyous room. Not a fan could be found who wasn’t covered in sweat, with the biggest of smiles plastered on their face, breathlessly anticipating the next time Baths comes to town." - KEXP 90.3FM (Seattle) BLOG March 4, 2011

HIGH Energy Live Shows: "Anyone who got bored by the Flaming Lips‘ somewhat style-over-substance set on the opening night of this year’s Primavera Sound festival, and wandered off looking for something less indulgent, may have encountered Baths (aka 21-year-old Los Angelean Will Wiesenfeld) tearing the Pitchfork stage to shreds as the false dawn broke over the Mediterranean . . . Baths unleashed track after track of crunching, stuttering beats and subterranean, undulating bass, sauced with impenetrable vocals and swirling electronica. Just the ticket to keep the 5 am fatigue at bay." -THERE GOES THE FEAR August 30, 2011

HIGH Energy Live Shows: "Baths, aka producer Will Weisenfield, drew a packed “house” for his club-like set [at the 2011 Pitchfork Music Festival]. Unlike the chair-dancing Gatekeeper from Friday, Baths moved swiftly around his laptop and tweaked various knobs intricately, like good musicians wield their instruments. Much of it seemed like compelling improv, where he added and subtracted sounds that included quirky samples alongside electronic and live instrument samples to keep the crowd moving. And that they did." WBEZ 91.5FM Pop N Stuff July 17, 2011

Musical Wizard / Captivating Vocalist: "Prancing around his equipment, he combined all manner of glitch beats with acoustic flourishes, gurgles and hiccups from crickets. Then he stepped up to the mic. Seriously, if the Strokes and Daedelus—sans the waistcoat—went into the studio together, this would be the result." -TIME OUT CHICAGO July 17, 2011

Hallowbaloo Preview

Baths, a.k.a. Will Wiesenfeld, creates music awash in dreamy beats, tinkling bells, subtly pulsating bass and celestial vocals. Adding his own generous and distinct contributions to the quickly-growing L.A. beat scene, Baths pushes musical boundaries along with pioneering contemporaries such as Flying Lotus, Nosaj Thing and Teebs. Baths’ bedroom-created chillwave music also stands alongside the likes of Toro Y Moi with touches of Björk readily apparent as well.

Baths debut album, ‘Cerulean,’ garnered critical acclaim upon its release in 2010 by reputable indie label Anticon. The A.V. Club listed ‘Cerulean’ in its top 25 albums of 2010. Additionally, Pitchfork rated the album 8.2 out of 10 and later included the album on its “2010 Albums of the Year: Honorable Mention List.” Pitchfork writes: “This is music that’s physically demanding to compose and perform, requiring deep concentration and focus . . . These beats have muscle.”

At only 22 years old, Wiesenfeld has earned wide-ranging accolades under his Baths persona that are impressive in their own light. But add that to four albums and three EPs under his previous moniker “[Post-Foetus]”, as well as a release from his side project Geotic earlier this year, and the anticipation of dazzling future work from this young artist becomes that much greater. Trained in piano from the age of 4, Wiesenfeld is also versed in viola, contrabass and guitar, and his classical training shines through and strengthens his electronic music identity.

As absorbing as his recordings can be, Baths stands apart in that his Live sets make people move - vigorously. As musical waves take over your body, you can’t help but dance with the music. Pitchfork writes, “He manages to shift expectations more with the genre-bucking garrulousness of his live show, further adding to the welcome dashes of wit and color that are riddled throughout these recordings.” Additional evidence of Wiesenfeld’s reputation as a live force comes in the form of SPIN magazine naming Baths as one of “10 Must-Hear Acts at the 2011 Pitchfork Music Festival.” And he did not disappoint with ‘The Chicago Tribune’, ‘Time Out Chicago’ and ‘WBEZ 91.5 FM’ all praising Baths for turning his 5pm set at Pitchfork into a full-on dance party. That’s particularly impressive when you take into account that his show took place on a large outdoor stage on 90+ degree Sunday after festival-goers had been bombarded with two full days & nights of shows. Of Baths’ March 1, 2011 show in Seattle, KEXP 90.3 FM writes, “Though the encore lasted for only one song, it was a stirring moment of further bliss in an already joyous room. Not a fan could be found who wasn’t covered in sweat, with the biggest of smiles plastered on their face, breathlessly anticipating the next time Baths comes to town.”

Baths will get your heart pulsing in time with the beat of his music. This is show you’ll want to completely dive into and splash about until your fingers turn to prunes.
